Safe Hiking Preparation - Will you know what to do if something does go wrong?

Safe hiking needs prior thought and preparation especially if you are going up mountains and into wilderness areas which are harsh and at times merciless environments.

There is little room for error, injury or illness so you need to be aware of how to look after yourself and your hiking companions if something does go wrong.

Avoiding Navigation Errors

Such errors will lead you astray and cost you time which in turn may reduce your hiking safety.

Our Navigation pages will help to point you in the right direction!

You should practise Map and Compass work and learn to Find North, give Grid References and avoid the worst of Steep Ground.

Timing your Hike will help you get home before darkness and the process can give you a better understanding of the route.

NEW FREE TOOL TO DOWNLOAD  -

See this section for our 'Hiking Timetable' to help you plan and time your hike.

When it Goes Wrong

Get your timing wrong and you may have to spend a night on the mountain.

Before you are Benighted read our tips on preparation.

The one thing we hikers dread is a serious injury or illness occurring on the mountain or in the wilderness. If something does happen could you cope? Read about

Accident Procedure before you set out again.

And do not forget your First Aid Kit!

Other Points

Tell someone at home (or at base camp) exactly where you are hiking. Better still give them a copy of your hiking log. See Timing your Hike.

Make sure you have studied the map in advance and if you are leading a group you should know the route from recent experience, otherwise do a full reccy of the hike a week or so before. This will save valuable time on the day of the group walk.
