Exploring Hiking Vacations and Adventure Travel
Are you looking at hiking vacations abroad and want some ideas? The aim of this section is to explore the different kinds of hiking vacations and provide ideas, quality sources for more information and our top tips for safe trekking. We will cover the range from living-in-the-wilds to living-in-luxury to once-in-a-lifetime-adventures. For my wife, my two year old son and me - John, our vacation choices need a good base like an apartment or holiday home. On the other hand (and a few years off for us), my parents, David and Dolores, frequently cycle ‘n’ camp or backpack.

So besides the natural beauty, fresh air and exercise…
Hiking vacations are relaxing, away from the crowds and can be easy on the pocket depending on your choices. You almost always get to see new areas from a side that is often missed by many, such as the medieval pilgrim trail ‘Via Francigena’ (pictured below) from historic Canterbury, England, to Rome, Italy. It passes Tuscan villages, medieval towers and ancient settlements and that is just the latter Italian section. We love history and culture, so getting a mix of hiking and exploring the local sites is a real winner with our family.

Walking holidays can be whatever you want them to be…
You can backpack it, cycle ‘n’ camp, take a Recreational Vehicle (RV), motorhome or caravan. You can stay in a trailer, holiday home,
cottage
or hostels along the route or base yourself in an apartment or hotel. This flexibility really opens up the area you are visiting and the bonus is that every day will bring new sights and experiences.
For bigger adventures...
There are mountain treks along ancient Incan trails up to Machu Picchu (pictured right), the lost city of the Incas. Or safari treks, the pyramids and Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa and many amazing others across every continent. You can get reasonably priced adventures through some of the larger charity organisations, which in return you raise a specific amount of sponsorship. Also there are many adventure travel companies that cater for families and groups and some to make new friends and relationships.
Trek safely – top tips:
Do let people know your itinerary; where you will be and when. When visiting new areas, research what to expect and what you will need. This is everything from wildlife to see or to be aware of, the local temperature to the terrain you’ll be hiking. You’ll need items such as local maps, water purification tablets and you may need permits plus, prior to visiting, any necessary injections. Use reputable travel companies and, particularly for adventures, use expert tour guides. Adequate travel insurance to cover your vacation activities. As with day hiking, carry kit to cover having to spend the night outside. This must include a lightweight survival bag / blanket or some form of shelter such as a bivvy bag or tent. A whistle, spark rod or waterproof & windproof matches and enough water. See our page on
First Aid Kits containing essential items.
