Your Basic Hiking Equipment Checklist For Mountain Hikes


Whether you are new to hiking or just want a brief hiking equipment checklist to refer to, the following should be stongly considered as your minimum equipment requirements:

  1. Hiking boots that you have "broken in".

  2. Trekking socks and depending on your own preference, thin liner socks.

  3. A fully waterproof jacket that has a hood with a stiff peak.

  4. Waterproof over trousers and gaitors.

  5. A windbloc fleece and/or a light "shell".

  6. Rucksack.

  7. Sandwiches and energy food plus at least a litre of water.

  8. Torch.

  9. Map and compass.

  10. Small first aid kit including plasters/blister pack.

  11. A loud whistle.

  12. Warm trousers in winter (Jeans are not advised).

  13. A spare top/baselayer in winter.

  14. In hot weather carry more water and/or be prepared to boil/treat stream water.

  15. Emergency survival bag.

  16. Warm hat, gloves and waterproof gloves.

  17. Baseball type hat etc for sun shade.



You should also consider taking:

  1. Walking poles.

  2. Mobile phone/cell phone.

  3. A handheld GPS unit.
