First Aid Kit - What It Needs To Contain
A well stocked first aid kit is a must if you want to be able to deal with blisters, cuts and grazes, mosquitoes, ticks or just a headache. Anyone of them can ruin a day's hiking. Your kit must be able to give relief to blisters, insect bites, moderate pain and give support to say a broken arm. You can buy cheap kits on the internet as a starter pack but you should ensure that you are carrying at least the following: Waterproof plasters (band aids), some cut into strips to put on a blistered heel or on the back of your heels at the start of the walk if your boots are still new or if you are planning to walk over say 15 miles. Compeed and/or blister packs for bad blisters! Spray on skin. Antiseptic ointment or wipes. Sterile pads. Tape. Gauze as a pressure pad or protective cover. Sterile skin closures. Latex gloves. Crepe Bandage. Triangular arm sling bandage. A vent aid or airway kit. Tweezers and small scissors and/or a knife. Insect sting relief for bites and preferably along with an insect repellent spray to help avoid being bitten. Medications if you suffer from any allergies. Paracetamol or other pain killer as pain can come in any form, be it from a fall, a cut, scratch or graze or even a headache etc. Anti-inflammatory medication. Aspirin. Don’t forget to take your prescription medication with you. Sun block. Sowing needle and thread. Matches preferably waterproof and windproof ones and/or a flint and striker or spark rod.
You should make sure you have some idea how to use all of the above! You will find plenty of advice in relevant books and on the internet. Just search for 'first aid advice' on Google.
