Bear Grylls Survival Tips

Want some great survival tips? See our Bear Grylls' tips at the end of this page.

But first a bit about Bear...

Bear Grylls is a man who has always loved adventure. During his time in the Special Air Service (SAS), a special forces unit of the British army, he broke his back in three places in a parachuting accident. He fought his way to recovery through 18 months in a military hospital and two years later entered the Guinness Book of Records as the youngest Briton to climb Mount Everest aged only 23. He has since led ground-breaking expeditions across the world.

He is the star of the Discovery Channel's "Man Vs Wild", in which he strands himself in remote locations to demonstrate localized survival techniques. It has become one of the most watched shows on the planet, reaching an estimated 1.2 billion viewers.

In his shows, also known as Born Survivor, you see him eating grubs from tree trunks to survive, which really makes you cringe as they crunch and ooze between his teeth. He'll catch fresh salmon in rivers and eat the flesh raw and eat maggots off a rotting carcass to demonstate what you must do to sustain yourself.

In Man Vs Wild Season 4 DVD boxset, Bear takes Will Ferrell on a survival adventure in the frozen Northern region of Sweden. Will Ferrell excels with humour and rises to Bear's challenges such as eating animal eyeballs and cold, arduous trekking across snow and ice.

Bear was appointed as the youngest ever Chief Scout to 28 million Scouts worldwide and has authored 10 books, including the No 1 Bestseller "Mud, Sweat & Tears".

Bear Grylls' Top 10 Useful Household Items

When you're out in the wild and you can't run to the store for supplies, here's a list of household items that might come in handy:

  1. Make-up mirror - Reflects the sun, signaling to airplanes.

  2. Credit card - Can be used to cut or, if it includes a reflective hologram, can signal for help.

  3. Bra - Serves as water filter.

  4. Lipstick - Can be used to write SOS on the top of your car or neighbouring rocks.

  5. Tampon - Serves as tinder once broken up into fuzz.

  6. Shoelace - Binds sticks and other items together to create shelter.

  7. Sock - Can also filter water.

  8. Wristwatch - Determine direction by pointing the hour hand at the sun and form an imaginary line through the center of the "wedge" created between the hour hand and 12 o'clock -- that is your north-south line.

  9. Paper clip - When magnetized, makes a makeshift compass.

  10. Battery - Cross with wire to generate a spark in order to start a fire.
